Editting/Proof-reading

I am currently doing a voluntary edit of a short story - and I'm really enjoying it.
The story is quite an interesting idea, but the grammar is not good and neither is the layout. That is my first task.
Then comes the content. There's lots of dialogue, probably too much, and there is not enough description, so I've got to mark places to add or take away.
This is the first time I've ever done anything like this but I'm enjoying it. I even think I've got a flair for it!
One question: Whay can I see errors in other people's documents immediately but can never spot them in my own?
